PV panel decommissioning is growing rapidly for a variety of reasons: aging systems, extreme weather damage, upgrading, and tax policies. This “someday” problem is already here, and Recycle PV Solar (RPVS) and Solaris Global are partnering to bring efficient end-to-end reuse or recycling services for decommissioned solar PV panels. RPVS will be focused on reuse and recycling while Solaris will handle logistics.

“We’re thrilled to be working with Solaris to address the rapidly increasing growth of decommissioned PV panels we have been seeing,” said Recycle PV Solar’s CEO, Sam Vanderhoof. “Combining Solaris’s impressive logistics and solar supply chain capabilities with Recycle PV Solar’s understanding of the reuse and recycling markets, along with other projects we have been working on, for decommissioned PV panels is a real win-win for helping the solar industry keep PV sustainable and out of landfills.”

Exponential growth of PV installations continues in the US and so will the growth in PV panel waste streams. According to SEIA, around 140,000 solar panels are being installed per day. In a recent 2020 study, the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) projected US solar waste streams to accrue to as much as 1.2 million metric tons (74.6 GW) by 2030.

“Solaris, too, has been seeing a significant growth in decommissioned PV panels over the last few years. We are excited to be working with Recycle PV Solar in this rapidly developing space,” said Solaris’s EVP, Neville Darlaston. “We see this as not only an area where Solaris can bring its logistics expertise to bear on this issue to provide cost effective solutions for our clients, but also an opportunity to extend our global commitment to sustainability.”

Recycle PV Solar, based in Nevada, has recently moved into its new facility in Reno/Sparks (just down the street from the Tesla Gigafactory), which is part of Solaris’s expansive facility, and begun setting up expanded operations. Recycle PV Solar was founded in 2018 to address the rapid growth of PV waste resulting from the exponential growth of PV in the US. In 2019, Recycle PV Solar and PV CYCLE (a global expert in PV recycling programs) entered into a partnership to develop the US market.

Solaris, a subsidiary of Fracht USA and a part of the global Fracht Group (https://www.fracht.com/en/index.php), was established in 2019 to provide end-to-end solutions across the globe for the solar industry and and fill in logistics and supply chain gaps.

Have you checked out our YouTube page?

We have a ton video interviews and additional content on our YouTube page. Recently we debuted Power Forward! -- a collaboration with BayWa r.e. to discuss higher level industry topics as well as best practices / trends for running a solar business today.

Our longer running side project is The Pitch -- in which we have awkward discussions with solar manufacturers and suppliers about their new technology and ideas so that you don't have to. We've discusses everything from residential rail-less deck attaching and home solar financing to large-scale energy storage value stacking and utility-driven new home solar + storage microgrids.

We also post our Project of the Year announcements there! Interviews with this year's winners will be up starting the week of Nov. 8. Head there and subscribe today to stay on top of all this extra stuff.
