Check out this 200-ft ‘Solar, Not Oil’ message to California Governor

Solar and climate activists wrote this giant 200-foot message in the sand on Huntington Beach calling on Governor Newsom to defend rooftop solar against attacks by big utilities and the fossil fuel industry. The sand message, reading “Gov: Solar, Not Oil,” comes in the aftermath of last month’s dangerous spill that spread 25,000 gallons of oil across Southern California beaches, and amid a contentious battle over the fate of net metering.

This drone footage came to us courtesy of Save California Solar, a coalition founded by the Solar Rights Alliance, California’s association of solar users, to help ensure that rooftop solar continues to grow and benefit every Californian.

For those unaware, Net Energy Metering makes rooftop solar more affordable for consumers of all types by compensating them for the excess energy they produce and share with their neighbors and protecting them from discriminatory fees. Rooftop solar is growing fastest in working- and middle-class neighborhoods because of successful policies like net energy metering.

By making rooftop solar much more expensive, utilities would eliminate a growing competitor, keep consumers stuck within their monopoly, and maintain the need for costly and often dangerous transmission lines that are a key driver of utility profits and ratepayer costs.

Have you checked out our YouTube page?

We have a ton video interviews and additional content on our YouTube page. Recently we debuted Power Forward! -- a collaboration with BayWa r.e. to discuss higher level industry topics as well as best practices / trends for running a solar business today.

Our longer running side project is The Pitch -- in which we have awkward discussions with solar manufacturers and suppliers about their new technology and ideas so that you don't have to. We've discusses everything from residential rail-less deck attaching and home solar financing to large-scale energy storage value stacking and utility-driven new home solar + storage microgrids.

We also post our Project of the Year announcements there! Interviews with this year's winners will be up starting the week of Nov. 8. Head there and subscribe today to stay on top of all this extra stuff.
